Women, Privilege, and Power: British Politics, 1750 to the Present by Amanda Vickery,
This book examines the many different ways in which women achieved public standing political science ranking and exercised political power in England from the middle of the eighteenth century to the present. It shows how rank, property, political science ranking and inheritance could confer de facto power on privileged women, political science ranking and how across the centuries the arrogance of birth political science ranking and title empowered aristocratic women to overawe enfranchised men of lower social standing. The essays contribute to an ongoing "rethinking of the political", a consequence in part of the rediscovery of the work of Jurgen Habermas by political political science ranking and social historians. For Habermas, the public sphere included print media political science ranking and voluntary associations, political science ranking and the contributors stress the extent of female engagement in political culture broadly conceived. However, they extend this definition of the public sphere further still to include the "private" world of family connections political science ranking and friendship networks, within which political ideas were debated political science ranking and new social practices played out. Many of the essays are inspired by a related effort to reintegrate radical female activists within their political milieu. Although feminist hagiography has accustomed us to see female activists as heroic outsiders rising sui generis from a hostile environment, recent research restores them to their intellectual political science ranking and familial contexts. Finally, the contributors explore the limits political science ranking and possibilities of women's citizenship both before political science ranking and after winning the right to vote. Together, the essays tell a continuous political science ranking and complex story, redefining political activity political science ranking and reassessing the turning points of British political history.

Tuned Out: Why Americans Under 40 Don't Follow the News

Tuned Out: Why Americans Under 40 Don't Follow the News
At a rate never before seen in American history, young adults are abandoning traditional news media. Tuned Out: Why Americans Under 40 Don't Follow the News examines the reasons behind this problem political science ranking and its consequences for American society. Author David T. Z. Mindich speaks directly to young people to discover why some tune in while others tune out--and how America might help them tune back in. Based on discussions with young adults from across the United States, Mindich investigates the decline in news consumption over the past four decades. In 1972, 74% of Americans in their mid-30s said they read a newspaper every day. Today, fewer than 28% do so. The average viewer age at CNN is currently about 60 years old. And while many point to the Internet as the best hope for rekindling interest in the news, only 11% of young people list the news as a major reason for logging on--entertainment, e-mail, political science ranking and Instant Messenger are ranked far higher on their list. Exploring the political, journalistic, political science ranking and social consequences of this decrease in political awareness, Mindich poses the question: What are the consequences of two successive generations tuning out? He asserts that as young adults abandon the kinds of news needed to make political decisions, they have unwittingly ceded power to their elders. In an engaged political science ranking and intelligent way, Mindich outlines these problems political science ranking and proposes real solutions. An indispensable resource for anyone interested in media or politics, Tuned Out: Why Americans Under 40 Don't Follow the News is also ideal for undergraduate political science ranking and graduate students in journalism, media, communication, political science, American studies, sociology, political science ranking and education.
